Peter Doughan

43, Disability Pensioner, Sydney

Peter started smoking at the age of 15 and smoked 40-50 cigarettes a day for 25 years. He is now on a disability pension due to mental health problems.

“Smokes have been my best friend since the age of 15 years. I always turned to them when times are bad” he said.

He tried to stop smoking many times with patches and lozenges, but always relapsed when under stress. Last time he gained 5-10kg.

Peter started vaping in 2016 and quit smoking immediately. He had one brief lapse when his e-liquid supply was delayed, but has otherwise remained smoke free for three years.

He started with 18mg/ml nicotine but has gradually reduced and now vapes nicotine-free e-liquid.

Since quitting, Peter has saved many thousands of dollars, has paid off his credit card bill and has more money to spend on food and taxis. Unlike before, he has not gained any weight since quitting. He is breathing better, he has more energy, sleeps better and is coping better with stress.

Peter says ‘‘I never thought I’d be able to quit. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I prefer the e-cigarette to smoking. The e-cigarette helps me manage the bad days”.
